We welcome anyone interested in trying underwater hockey. Newcomers are coached by volunteers from the Club. Once new players have been introduced to the equipment and a few basics, we’ll let you play in your first game.
The Game
The game is played by two teams (one with black sticks and one with white). In smaller pools (25m) games are usually played the full length, whereas in an Olympic size pool (50m) we can play width-wise. The maximum number of players in the pool at one time is 12 (six (6) per team), though substitutions occur during the game as those waiting on deck also participate in the game.
The objective of the game is to put a weighted puck in a 3 meter long tin trough (the goals) which are placed at the opposite ends of the pool (see The Ref’s Corner for more details).
The challenge of holding one’s breath while trying to make a play makes teamwork essential! The puck is advanced by pushing or flicking it while swimming and passing it along the bottom of the pool.
Non-Contact
Underwater hockey is a non-contact sport (though some contact is inevitable, especially in the shallow end of the pool). Body checking, holding and blocking are not allowed. Our games are pick-up games, and therefore usually self-refereed. At tournaments official rules are enforced under the watchful eyes of three referees, two (2) in the water, and one (1) on the pool deck.
Equipment
Personal equipment for underwater hockey is minimal. It consists of a swimsuit, mask, fins, snorkel, cap, glove, stick, and mouth guard. The puck and goals (troughs) are the only other pieces of equipment.
